Avengers: Endgame writers explain why Nick Fury was absent from the final battle

July 29, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Although he did show up ever so briefly in the closing scenes of Avengers: Endgame to pay tribute to Tony Stark, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury was a somewhat surprising absence during the climatic showdown between the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Thanos and his forces.

Speaking to Comic Book, Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have revealed that there were never any plans to include Fury in the epic battle, as it was feared that his skill set would underwhelm next to the superhuman abilities and powers on display.

“I don’t think we ever put him in,” Markus admitted. “It was [because] we have such a traffic jam of heroes and so much power, that to have a guy who, in combat, would just be firing a gun… it doesn’t come off well for Nick Fury, frankly.”

The explanation makes sense, but it would certainly have been nice to see Fury have some involvement, even if it was proving air support or directing the battle from a helicarrier. Still, at least we got plenty of the character this year with his roles in Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home.
