Damon Lindelof responds to Alan Moore’s displeasure over HBO’s Watchmen with a respectful “f*ck you”

July 25, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Damon Lindelof doesn’t mind that Watchmen co-creator Alan Moore isn’t a fan of the HBO adaptation.

Watchmen is one of the most beloved comic-book runs in history and co-creator Alan Moore isn’t a big fan of people adapting his work for the screen. The Wrap reports that at a TCA Q&A, HBO’s Casey Bloys was asked if Moore had changed his mind: “I think that remains the case. That he’s not thrilled.”

TV Line has spoken to the showrunner Damon Lindelof and asked if him how he feels about it. Lindelof referred to Moore as a “genius” and appreciates his “rebellious spirit”. He also went on to say if Moore was told not to do something back in the day “he would say, ‘Fuck you. I’m doing it anyway… so I’m channeling the spirit of Alan Moore to tell Alan Moore, ‘Fuck you. I’m doing it anyway.”

Of course, pleasing the original creator of the property is a nice thing but at the end of the day, the show will live and die depending on the audience’s response – including both existing fans of the material and those who have never heard of Watchmen.

Watchmen takes place in an alternative, contemporary reality in the United States, in which masked vigilantes became outlawed due to their violent methods. Despite this, some gather around in order to start a revolution while others are going out to stop it before it is too late, as a greatly wide question levitates above them all; who watches the Watchmen?

Watchmen is set to premiere in October and stars Regina King (The Leftovers), Jeremy Irons (Justice League), Don Johnson (Miami Vice), Tim Blake Nelson (The Incredible Hulk), Louis Gossett Jr. (Iron Eagle), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman), Adelaide Clemens (Rectify), Andrew Howard (Truth or Dare), Tom Mison (Sleepy Hollow), Frances Fisher (Titanic), Jacob Ming-Trent (White Famous), Sara Vickers (Endeavour), Dylan Schombing (Sharp Objects), James Wolk (Tell Me a Story), Lily Rose Smith (The Vampire Diaries), Jean Smart (Legion), Hong Chau (Downsizing) and Dustin Ingram (Sun Records).
