Avengers: Endgame’s five year time jump will not be undone in the MCU’s “complicated” future

August 1, 2019 by Samuel Brace

The filmmakers for Avengers: Endgame have said that the film’s time jump of five years will not be undone by future events in the MCU.

Although Avengers: Endgame came out in 2019, the MCU is now taking place in the year 2023 thanks to a five-year time jump that took place in the movie. This certainly makes thing a little more complicated timeline-wise.

But during the commentary for Endgame‘s digital release (via ComicBook.com), the filmmakers have confirmed that the time jump is here to stay. Co-director Anthony Russo commented on the complex nature of these events:

“The premise here is a very complicated premise, right? You know, bringing people back from five years ago is a messy proposition any way you look at it. Not even talking about the time travel complexities of it. You know, that’s something I know some people like to think about after watching the movie…”

Co-writer Stephen McFeely added: “It’s like if you were in a plane, what happens to that now when you come back?”

Anthony also asked what happens to the people who’ve remarried in the five years time jump that took place.

Joe Russo then said: “Or you have kids. But that’s I think, one of the most compelling things about the movie, is doubling down at the end and not reversing it. So the Marvel Universe moving forward takes place five years in the future, and its a really complicated future.”

It will certainly be interesting to see what problems and situations this future set MCU poses in phase four. It seems like things are only going to get more complicated from here on out.

Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Benedict Wong (Wong), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), Evangeline Lilly (The Wasp), Letitia Wright (Shuri) and Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie).
