Homecoming and Far From Home’s Jon Watts in talks to direct Spider-Man 3 for Marvel and Sony

September 29, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Spider-Man fans had cause to celebrate this week as Disney and Sony announced that they had reached an agreement to continue shared custody of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, with Spidey set to make at least two more appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – a third solo movie, and another as-yet-unrevealed Marvel Studios film.

With a release date of July 16th 2021 set for the as-yet-untitled third Spider-Man movie, Deadline is reporting that Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home helmer Jon Watts is now in final talks to return to the director’s chair and wrap up the cliffhanger that he left us with this past July when J.K. Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson revealed the web-slinger’s real identity to the world.

Meanwhile, a post over at The Hollywood Reporter has suggested that while both Sony and Disney are suggesting that the Spider-Man deal could be extended past these next two appearances, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige “seems to be plotting an endgame that will wrap up Peter Parker’s story in the MCU and could see the character cross over into Sony’s own budding universe of characters.”

Given that Marvel Studios faced the prospect of a major unresolved cliffhanger in the MCU when talks between Disney and Sony first broke down, it certainly seems like a wise move on Feige’s part to avoid a potential repeat of that situation.

Are you glad that Spider-Man’s MCU story is set to continue with Jon Watts at the helm? Let us know your thoughts in the comments, or on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
