John Boyega addresses racist reactions to his role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

October 10, 2015 by Gary Collinson

The first teaser for Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrived online back in February, and despite offering only the briefest of glimpses into the film, the majority of fans of the saga were left blown away… that is, save for a few buffoons, who expressed their displeasure over the fact that British actor John Boyega was portraying a black stormtrooper.

Speaking to V Magazine, Boyega has now addressed the racist reactions to his role, stating that: “I’m in the movie, what are you going to do about it? You either enjoy it or you don’t. I’m not saying get used to the future, but what is already happening. People of color and women are increasingly being shown on-screen. For things to be whitewashed just doesn’t make sense. It’s about getting people to drop a prejudiced state of mind and realize, ‘Oh shit we’re just watching normal people.’”
