Werner Herzog “forgot” that The Mandalorian’s Baby Yoda wasn’t real

November 28, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Werner Herzog, one of the stars of The Mandalorian, nearly forgot that Baby Yoda wasn’t a real creature when filming.

Baby Yoda has taken the internet by storm, only adding to the delight of Star Wars fans by the new Disney+ show The Mandalorian. Werner Herzog, who has scenes with the creature onset, is a big fan as well, and apparently, he even forgot that it wasn’t a puppet!

Deborah Chow, who directed Herzog in an episode of the show, told Vanity Fair about a bizarre moment she had while shooting: “I had a day with one of the weirdest moments I’ve ever had directing. I was directing Werner with the puppet, and Werner had just fallen in love with the baby. Werner, I think, had forgotten it wasn’t actually a live creature, and started sort of… directing the baby. Werner is talking to the baby as if it was a real thing. And I’m trying to direct Werner. And I’m just like, How did I get here? How did my life end up like this?”

Chow also commented on how taken she was with Baby Yoda herself: “It was pretty magical. I worked with the puppeteers and the visual effects [artists], and just worked with it like it was an actor. They’re the ones who gave it humanity, who gave it life. You could feel it on set. You have everybody from Werner Herzog to grips and gaffers getting moved by it. Every time we brought it on set, people would be melting.”

Fingers crossed there is plenty more Baby Yoda cuteness to come during the rest of season one! The Mandalorian continues each week on Disney+.
