UPDATE: DC’s Birds of Prey tracking $50 million domestic opening

January 19, 2019 by Gary Collinson

UPDATE: Official tracking estimates for Birds of Prey are now in and match up closely to the long-range forecast below, with Deadline reporting that the DC girl gang team-up is on course for a domestic opening weekend of between $49 million and $55 million. Original story follows…

With a little over six weeks to go until Warner Bros. and DC Films unleash the next chapter of the DC Extended Universe, the first tracking estimates for the Margot Robbie-headlined Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) are in, with Box Office Pro suggesting that the film is in line to earn around $50 million from its domestic opening weekend.

Should those numbers prove accurate, then the R-rated Birds of Prey will put it almost on par with this year’s Shazam!, which opened to $53.5 million domestically and went on to earn $364.6 million worldwide – enough to warrant a sequel in 2022. And similar to Shazam!, Birds of Prey has been produced on a relatively modest budget (at least as far as comic book movies go) of around $75 million, and so these numbers – while certainly no Joker – are likely to prove encouraging for Warner and DC.

And while we’re on the subject of Birds of Prey, Total Film has exclusively revealed two new images from the film featuring Margot Robbie’s Harley; check them out here…

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.

Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) is directing Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) from a script by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) with Margot Robbie reprising her Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo) as The Huntress, Jurnee Smolett-Bell (Underground) as Black Canary, Rosie Perez (Fearless) as Renee Montoya, Ella Jay Basco (Grey’s Anatomy) as Cassandra Cain, Ewan McGregor (Christopher Robin) as Black Mask, Chris Messina (Sharp Objects) as Victor Zsasz, Ali Wong (Black Box), Robert Catrini (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back), Steven Williams (The Chi), Dana Lee (Dr. Ken), Francois Chau (The Expanse, The Tick) and Matthew Willig (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs). It is set for release on February 7th 2020.
