Disney’s Bob Iger on The Mandalorian’s ‘Baby Yoda’, says Jon Favreau isn’t a fan of the moniker

December 27, 2019 by Gary Collinson

While Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has done little to repair the fractured Star Wars fanbase, it hasn’t all been bad news for the franchise lately as Disney and Lucasfilm’s live-action Disney+ series The Mandalorian has been earning rave reviews from both fans and critics alike.

The show’s biggest success however seems to be the character of The Child, who became an immediate fan-favourite and a pop culture phenomenon, earning the nickname ‘Baby Yoda’ as it took social media by storm. However, according to Disney chief Bob Iger, The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau isn’t a fan of the ‘Baby Yoda’ moniker.

“We don’t refer to the Child or the Asset the way that the world is referring to the Child or the Asset,” said Iger. “Baby Yoda, that’s a no-no. I got chastised, in my early emails to Jon Favreau, I referenced in my emails Baby Yoda. It just seemed easy, and I got my wrist slapped by Jon a few times. ‘It’s not Baby Yoda!’ I think people really want to know, what’s its name? What’s its real name? I know its real name and it’s one of the reasons that I have extra security now because I don’t want to be given some kind of truth serum by someone.”

With the season finale of The Mandalorian offering little in the way of answers regarding the character, never mind a name reveal, it seems that ‘Baby Yoda’ is going to stick until season two at the earliest.

The Mandalorian sees Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) leading a cast that includes Gina Carano (Deadpool), Carl Weathers (Rocky), Nick Nolte (Afflication), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man).
