James Gunn turned down the opportunity to direct a Superman movie

January 11, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Back in October, James Gunn revealed that when he was given the opportunity to make the jump from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to DC Extended Universe following his temporary exit from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the filmmaker was “basically offered whatever I wanted” from Warner Bros. – and it seems that included a new Superman movie.

“As has been reported many times, DC offered me whatever film I wanted to do, including some sort of Superman movie (not specifically Man of Steel 2 as I’ve seen reported),” said Gunn (via Comic Book). “I chose The Suicide Squad because it’s one of my favorite properties in the world. It’s the story I wanted to tell more than any other.”

It’s interesting that Gunn notes the Superman project wasn’t Man of Steel 2; as we know, Henry Cavill’s status as the Man of Steel remains up in the air following his last appearance in Justice League, and there have been reports that Warner Bros. was considering taking Superman in a different direction, including a potential relaunch with Michael B. Jordan.

Would you have liked to see James Gunn tackling Superman, or do you think The Suicide Squad is a better fit for the filmmaker? Let us know in the comments below or on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

The Suicide Squad is set for release on August 6th 2021 and features a cast that includes the returning Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag) and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) alongside new DCEU additions Idris Elba, Peter Capaldi, John Cena, Alice Braga, Nathan Fillion, Taika Waititi, Jennifer Holland, David Dastmalchian, Joaquín Cosío, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Julio Ruiz, Steve Agee, Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn.
