The Invisible Man scaring up impressive $26 million domestic opening

February 29, 2020 by EJ Moreno

Blumhouse seems to have something on their hands with The Invisible Man , with the horror remake materializing a projected opening weekend box office of $26 million at 3,610 North American locations.

The Saturday estimates are placing the film in the first place position, besting the former number one Sonic The Hedgehog, which will bring in around $15 million in its third week. That brings the domestic total for Sonic to $127 million in 17-days. Disney and 20th Century Studios’ dog-themed adventure film The Call of the Wild is rounding out the top three with $13 million, getting near $46 million in its first ten days.

Going back to the Universal and Blumhouse horror film, The Invisible Man is doing better than what the studio was projecting. Industry and studio projections had the movie at $20 million for its opening weekend, and there’s still room for the movie to further its over-performance.

The remake brought home about $9.8 million just on Friday alone. Compare that with its budget of just $7 million, and director Leigh Whannell (Upgrade) has an undeniable hit on his hands. Add in the B+ on Cinemascore, and The Invisible Man could play for weeks to come with its positive word of mouth.

Trapped in a violent, controlling relationship with a wealthy and brilliant scientist, Cecilia Kass (Elisabeth Moss) escapes in the dead of night and disappears into hiding, aided by her sister (Harriet Dyer, NBC’s The InBetween), their childhood friend (Aldis Hodge, Straight Outta Compton) and his teenage daughter (Storm Reid, HBO’s Euphoria).

But when Cecilia’s abusive ex (Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House) commits suicide and leaves her a generous portion of his vast fortune, Cecilia suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of eerie coincidences turns lethal, threatening the lives of those she loves, Cecilia’s sanity begins to unravel as she desperately tries to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.

The Invisible Man is out now.
