Quentin Tarantino wanted to make a Luke Cage movie after Reservoir Dogs but his friends talked him out of it

April 6, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Way before the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe began and Netflix acquired the rights to The Defenders, director Quentin Tarantino had an idea for a Luke Cage movie featuring a beloved actor and has revealed why the project never came to fruition.

In a recent episode of Amy Schumer’s Podcast 3 Girls, 1 Keith, Tarantino revealed that the idea for a Luke Cage movie starring Laurence Fishburne came between Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, but his friends talked him out of the project despite his admiration for the character.

“There was a time before all this Marvel shit was coming out,” Tarantino said. “It was after Reservoir Dogs, it was before Pulp Fiction, and I had thought about doing Luke Cage. Growing up I was a big comic-book collector, and my two favourites were Luke Cage: Hero for Hire, later Luke Cage: Power Man, and Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu.”

“What dissuaded me … was my comic-geek friends talked me out of it,” Tarantino continued. “Because I had an idea that Larry Fishburne would’ve been the perfect guy to play Luke Cage. But all my friends were like, ‘It’s got to be Wesley Snipes.’ And I go, ‘Look, I like Wesley Snipes, but Larry Fishburne is practically Marlon Brando. I think Fish is the man.’ And they’re like, ‘Yeah, but he’d have to get in shape in a big way. Snipes is that way already!’ And I go, ‘Fuck that! That’s not that important! Fuck you, you ruined the whole damn thing!’”

Although Quentin Tarantino never went ahead with the Luke Cage project, the Marvel hero did get his own two-season series on Netflix and had appearances in Netflix’s Jessica Jones and Netflix’s crossover series The Defenders, with Mike Colter taking on the role.

Would you like to have seen Quentin Tarantino take on a Luke Cage movie? Who’d have made a better Luke Cage – Laurence Fishburne or Wesley Snipes? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @flickeringmyth…
