Mark Ruffalo says he tried to talk Marvel out of casting him as the Hulk

April 18, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Mark Ruffalo, the actor behind the MCU’s Hulk, has revealed that he tried to talk Marvel out of casting him.

Actors are a strange bunch. One would think you would jump at the chance to play a major Marvel hero on the big screen but Mark Ruffalo wasn’t too excited by the idea of playing the Hulk at first.

Apparently, he tried to talk Marvel out of casting him in the Avengers, revealing that he didn’t think he could pull off the character. Speaking to Variety, he said:

“I did try to talk them out of casting me. I said, ‘I don’t know if I’m the right guy, I’ve never done anything like this.’ Between Joss Whedon and Robert Downey Jr., they were pretty convincing that I could do it. I was scared. I was really scared. I’m still scared. The technological aspect of it makes it really hard to work that way. I struggle with it all the time. But my motto is make fear your friend. Just keep pushing yourself into those places where you feel scared or challenged.”

It certainly worked out in the end as Ruffalo has been the most consistent Hulk performer for quite some time. But it’s interesting to think about what might have been if he decided to walk away.

At this point, it’s unclear when we’ll next see The Hulk on the big screen, although Ruffalo is expected to return to the role for the Disney+ series She-Hulk, which revolves around Bruce Banner’s cousin Jennifer Walters. It is slated to premiere on the streaming service in 2022.
