James Gunn read every Suicide Squad comic ahead of filming the DC sequel movie

April 29, 2020 by Samuel Brace

To prepare for making The Suicide Squad, director James Gunn says he read every single comic and the vast majority of Harley Quinn comics too.

It’s important for a director to do their homework before starting a new project, especially when adapting source material. For James Gunn and superhero movies, this means reading as many of the comics as possible before getting to work.

This is exactly what he did when preparing for The Suicide Squad sequel movie from DC. Answering a fan on Twitter who asked if he had a consultant who knows about the comics, he said:

“I’ve read all the comics I can concerning the characters I’m writing. For instance, I’ve read every single comic featuring every iteration of #TheSuicideSquad & probably 85% of everything #HarleyQuinn has ever been in up until the time of shooting.”

This is certainly what die-hard fans of these characters will be hoping to hear from the director. Hopefully, this will translate into a film that brings their stories and personalities to screen like never before.

The Suicide Squad sees James Gunn directing a cast that includes Suicide Squad returnees Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag) and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) as well as new DCEU additions Idris Elba, Peter Capaldi, Alice Braga, Nathan Fillion, Taika Waititi, Jennifer Holland, David Dastmalchian, Joaquín Cosío, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, John Cena, Pete Davidson, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Julio Ruiz, Steve Agee, Michael Rooker, and Sean Gunn.
