Disney CEO Bob Chapek remains “optimistic” about Mulan’s July release

May 12, 2020 by EJ Moreno

At the time of reporting, Disney’s Mulan is still sticking to its July 24th release date. This confirmation comes as Disney CEO Bob Chapnek opened up about the film’s release during this global health crisis.

While the studio is opting to skip the theatrical release of their upcoming film Artemis Fowl, debuting it directly onto Disney+ instead, Chapnek remains entirely on board with theatrical releases, stating that: “We believe in the theatrical experience, particularly to release big blockbuster films.”

That first major film since theatres shut down around the globe they have planned is Mulan, and the CEO feels confident, yet honest in his feelings on its upcoming release: “I think it’s going to be a stair-step situation like it is in our parks. If you think about the occupancy of a movie theater, 25% is the Monday through Friday afternoon [capacity]… It only becomes an issue on Friday and Saturday night, and to a lesser extent, on Sunday night. In that particular case, it can be managed and up to exhibitors. We’re optimistic.”

When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father. “Mulan” features a celebrated international cast that includes: Yifei Liu as Mulan; Donnie Yen as Commander Tung; Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan; Yoson An as Cheng Honghui; with Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor. The film is directed by Niki Caro from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek based on the narrative poem “The Ballad of Mulan.”
