Good Grief, The Peanuts Movie opens to a positive $45 million

November 9, 2015 by admin

Opening against Spectre was never going to an easy task, but The Peanuts Movie seemed up for the challenge – and didn’t slip when kicking the football.

Opening in around 3,900 screens, The Peanuts Movie brought home an estimated $45 million domestically. While not a great result given its rumoured $99 million budget, its CinemaScore of A should see its takings remain steady, meaning the needed total of $170 million doesn’t seem too far out of reach.

The film will suffer from stiff competition in the coming weeks however, as The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 could steal some of its audience next weekend (though its tracking to be the lowest opening of the franchise) and Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur is released at the end of November. Not to mention that Spectre will likely retain at least 40% of its audience next weekend, so The Peanuts Movie will need to rely on good reviews and positive word-of-mouth if its going to get to $170 million domestic.

The Peanuts Movie also opened in eleven other territories including China, but only brought in $4.5 million.

Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and the rest of the beloved “Peanuts” gang make their big-screen debut, like they’ve never been seen before, in state of the art 3D animation. Snoopy, the world’s most lovable beagle – and flying ace – embarks upon his greatest mission as he takes to the skies to pursue his arch-nemesis The Red Baron, while his best pal, Charlie Brown, begins his own epic quest. From the imagination of Charles M. Schulz and the creators of the ICE AGE films, SNOOPY AND CHARLIE BROWN: THE PEANUTS MOVIE will prove that every underdog has his day.

The Peanuts Movie is out now in the States and in the UK on December 21st.
