Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Broom Boy explains why he isn’t in The Rise of Skywalker

June 11, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Temirlan Blaev, who played the Star Wars: The Last Jedi character simply known as “Broom Boy” has an idea about why he didn’t appear in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

At the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we see a young boy utilise the force to pull a broom towards him, taking the stance of a child imitating a Jedi before the credits appear. This scene was used to show that Luke’s heroics on Crait, by sacrificing himself so that the Rebellion could be reborn, had spread throughout the galaxy.

Some people might have expected to see Broom Boy appear in Episode IX but actor Temirlan Blaev has questioned if his character is really that important. Speaking to YouTuber Jaime Stangroom, he said:

“I wasn’t sure because it could have been, yes, he would’ve continued my story, how Rey would have trained me or helped me in some way. But then at the same time, am I really that important? Am I someone big or am I really just a boy, a lucky boy in a galaxy far, far away? A lot of people were asking me [about returning], and I said, ’We’ll have to wait and see if I get called back. But I guess I kind of understand why it happened.”

It certainly appears that the character was meant as more of a symbol, that hope had spread throughout the galaxy, more than a set up for an important character in future movies. Of course, that could change in subsequent books, comics, films, or TV.
