One of the most memorable moments from Thor: Ragnarok is the use of Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song during the film’s final battle sequence where Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is taking down Hela’s army of undead soldiers on the Bifrost.
According to director Taika Waititi during a recent episode of the Russo Brothers’ Pizza Film School, the song helped define the type of movie he envisioned and wanted to use the track so much that he included it in the initial pitch to Marvel Studios.
“I made the sizzle reel with tonally what I wanted it to be,” Waititi said. “I wanted to capture a road trip of people who had no business hanging out with each other. I put all that to ‘Immigrant Song.'”
Waititi continued to explain that he was surprised Marvel Studios hadn’t included Immigrant Song in the first two Thor instalments as the song is basically about the God of Thunder.
“I was so surprised they hadn’t used it in the first two films,” Waititi added. “That song is basically about Thor. Just knowing the tone, knowing that it had to be playful and over the top.”
Going forward, Waititi is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to continue his directorial duties for the next instalment in the Thor franchise and after the perfect inclusion of Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song, we have to wonder what song the director may be planning to use in the Thor: Love and Thunder.
