Zendaya reveals her role in Dune may not be as large as we initially thought

August 10, 2020 by Liam Waddington

The upcoming adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune from director Denis Villeneuve is one of the most highly anticipated films of 2020 especially with the cast being packed with outstanding talent. However, one member of the cast has revealed her role may not be as large as we initially thought.

During an interview with InStyle, Zendaya admitted she doesn’t have much screentime in the upcoming Dune adaptation but reveals it was still a big deal to included in such a large cast.

“Dune was incredible. I wasn’t in it very much, so when I was watching the trailer, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh!’ I called Timothée [Chalamet, who stars in it] and said, ‘Dude! You should be proud.’ It is a big deal to even be a small part of something with such a massive cast. And I love sci-fi stuff too. It’s fun to escape into another world.”

In Dune, Zendaya is set to play Chani, a Fremen woman who is described as the love interest of Timothee Chalamet’s character, the hero Paul Atreides. Although she may only have a small role in Dune, Zendaya didn’t mention the size of her role for the upcoming second instalment in Denis Villeneuve’s franchise – so there’s a possibility she could have more screentime in part two.

A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

Dune is directed by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049) and sees Timothee Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name) leading the cast alongside Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Fallout), Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Dave Bautista (Avengers: Infinity War), Stellan Skarsgard (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), Charlotte Rampling (Red Sparrow), Zendaya (Spider-Man: Far From Home), Javier Bardem (Loving Pablo), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Fences), Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Sex Education), and Chang Chen (The Assassin).
