Now You See Me director discusses how he would approach the third instalment

October 13, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Lionsgate is currently in early development on a third entry in the Now You See Me franchise, with Oscar-nominated screenwriter Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle) signing on to pen the script, and now, director Louis Leterrier has discussed his approach if he was asked back for the third instalment.

In an interview with Discussing Film, Leterrier revealed that he’d take a more practical approach to the world of magic set up in the Now You See Me franchise following his work on the recently cancelled Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

“I will never not do practical effects at least. I learned so much from puppetry,” Leterrier said. “You have to understand, the whole [Dark Crystal] set was puppeted. Not only the heroes themselves but the flowers, the wings, everything. The whole set became animated.”

“So doing another Now You See Me or something similar, If I want to do another movie with magic, I would bring practical effects into that,” the filmmaker continued. “There’s something also very organic about it, practical effects and having people behind stuff. For example, there was a moment in The Dark Crystal where Brea unleashes some books. She was in the library, all the paper and books start rotating around her. The background was CG, but the foreground, all the pieces of paper, books, and things flying around were puppeted by people with rods underneath running around.”

As of yet, there’s no official confirmation from Lionsgate as to whether Leterrier is involved with the project and which actors will be returning to the franchise which has featured the likes of Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Morgan Freeman, Mark Ruffalo, Lizzy Caplan, Daniel Radcliffe, and Michael Caine.
