Marvel’s Disney+ shows will alleviate any notion of superhero fatigue says Kevin Feige

January 13, 2021 by Samuel Brace

Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, has discussed the impacts of the upcoming Disney+ shows on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The next phase of the MCU will feel a lot different with the introduction of the Disney+ shows, such as WandaVision. With a new medium to play with, there come new opportunities for creativity and variety in how Marvel tells its stories.

This fact is something that Marvel boss Kevin Feige thinks will help keep things fresh in the MCU. Speaking to Screen Rant, Feige was asked about how Disney+ shows like WandaVision will change the way they do things:

“It allows us to flex new muscles, different muscles, in a way that was perfect. I’ve been at Marvel for over 20 years, and it’s evolved and changed drastically – as you know better than anyone – over those 20 years. It has always been for the better, and it has always been to tell new stories.

“When people would ask about superhero fatigue in 2005, my answer was always, ‘As long as we keep making them unique.’ I don’t want to just keep making superhero movies, I want to make all types of movies; I want to make all types of stories and shows. And that’s what the MCU allows us to do. It happens to all be characters from the Marvel Universe, but people who’ve actually read the comics know, there’s such a great diversity of storytelling and tone and genre in comics. We’ve been doing that as well, and that’s what has kept it so remarkably exciting.

“Standing on a sitcom set designed to look like the late 50s and early 60s, with a studio audience and with actual old cameras and lighting equipment from the era, was surreal to me and such a fun thing. Just like seeing all the X-Men in costume for the first time on the first Marvel film that I worked on it. All these different experiences happen to be able to fall under the umbrella of this cinematic universe.”

WandaVision certainly feels like a very different type of superhero project and if Marvel can keep creating unique experiences that are unlike anything we have seen in the past, there should be little reason to fear a declining interest in superhero-themed content.

Marvel Studios’ captivating new series WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany and marks the first series from Marvel Studios streaming exclusively on Disney+. The series is a blend of classic television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision—two super-powered beings living idealized suburban lives—begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.

WandaVision is set to premiere January 15th, 2021, and features a cast that includes Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Paul Bettany (Vision), Kat Dennings (Darcy Lewis), Randall Park (Agent Jimmy Woo), Teyonah Parris (Empire) as Monica Rambeau, and Kathryn Hahn (Bad Moms) as Agnes.
