Sony Pictures delays Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Uncharted and Morbius

January 22, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Only a few weeks in 2021 and the film industry is still continuing to feel the effects of the ongoing global health crisis as Sony Pictures have announced they are pushing back several of their films.

Sony Pictures have revealed that Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the highly-anticipated follow-up film to Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II, is moving from its June 11th, 2021 release to November 11th, 2021, while Uncharted will now release on February 11th, 2022 instead of on its previous set date of July 16th, 2021. Sony has also decided to delay the upcoming superhero film Morbius starring Jared Leto to January 21st, 2022.

These delays may not come as much as a surprise given that movie theatres across the world are still unable to resume standard operations with the implemented health and safety precautions or will continue to remain closed for the foreseeable future.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife follows a single mother and her two children who arrive in a small town and begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. The film, which was written and directed by Jason Reitman, stars Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, Bokeem Woodbine, Celeste O’Connor, Oliver Cooper and newcomer Logan Kim, along with returning Ghostbusters cast members Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts.

While no specific plot details have been released so far, Uncharted, the upcoming adaptation of Naughty Dog’s popular video game series is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Venom, Zombieland: Double Tap) with a cast that includes Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Sully as well as Antonio Banderas, Sophia Ali, and Tati Gabrielle in undisclosed roles.

Morbius follows antihero Michael Morbius who is dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others suffering his same fate but soon finds out that the remedy is potentially worse than the disease. The film is directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) with a cast including Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft, Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, Jared Harris as Morbius’ mentor, and Tyrese Gibson as an FBI agent.
