Last fall HBO announced they were parting ways with Joss Whedon on his upcoming sci-fi show The Nevers and now, two months after his exit, HBO has hired Philippa Goslett (How To Talk To Girls At Parties) as the new showrunner.
The Nevers stars Lauren Donnelly (Outlander) as Amalia True, a member of a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.
This marks Goslett’s first time acting as showrunner over a series. She will also serve as executive producer alongside Jane Espenson and Doug Petrie while Whedon will remain credited as the series’ creator and an executive producer.
At the time of his departure Whedon said “I realize that the level of commitment required moving forward, combined with the physical challenges of making such a huge show during a global pandemic, is more than I can handle without the work beginning to suffer. I am genuinely exhausted, and am stepping back to martial my energy towards my own life, which is also at the brink of exciting change.”
However, his exit came around the conclusion of Warner Bros’ investigation into Whedon’s “gross, abusive, unprofessional and completely unacceptable” behaviour on the set of Justice League, a fact which the film’s star Ray Fisher attributed to the real reason for Whedon’s departure from The Nevers.
The Nevers stars Lauren Donnelly (Outlander), Olivia Williams (Counterpart), James Norton (Grantchester), Tom Riley (Dark Heart), Ann Skelly (Death and Nightingales), Ben Chaplin (The Children Act), Pip Torrens (The Crown), Zackary Momoh (Seven Seconds), Amy Manson (Torchwood), Nick Frost (Fighting With My Family), Rochelle Neil (Death in Paradise), Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark) and Denis O’Hare (This Is Us).
