Black Widow release decision will be “last minute” says Disney CEO

March 20, 2021 by Gary Collinson

While many of this year’s (and last year’s) big hitters have already been pushed back to later in the year when its hoped that lockdowns and restrictions will have started easing, Disney has so far held firm with its plans to debut Marvel Studios’ Black Widow in cinemas this May.

However, with less than seven weeks to go until its planned May 7th date, the Mouse House is yet to really launch the promotional push for the Scarlett Johansson-led solo blockbuster, and with Marvel’s Kevin Feige said to be against any kind of hybrid/streaming release, fans can be forgiven for fearing that another delay may be just around the corner.

Well, Disney CEO Bob Chapek has done little to alleviate those concerns, with the executive admitting to Bloomberg that: “Our situation and our conditions change. Just a few weeks ago, theaters in New York and Los Angeles weren’t even open. Now, all of a sudden they’re open, so we’re waiting to see how prospective theatergoers respond to these reopenings. We’re going to remain flexible. We’ll make the call probably at the last minute in terms of how these films come to market, whether it’s Black Widow or any other title.”

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden, Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) as Dreykov and Olivier Richters (The King’s Man) in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
