The Matrix 4: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II teases the “ambitious” technology used in the sequel

August 11, 2021 by Liam Waddington

With the fourth instalment in The Matrix franchise set to debut later this year, star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has discussed how he was slightly starstruck on-set.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II shared his reaction to seeing returning star Keanu Reeves on-set for the first time as well as stating that the technology that director Lana Wachowski used in the film is “ambitious.”

“I remember Keanu and his first line. I looked up, and there was Keanu, and I said, ‘Oh shit, I’m really in The Matrix,’ ” he says. “It was just Keanu in that voice. And the technology that Lana incorporated and the filmmaking, camera rigs that I’ve never seen before. It’s so ambitious. It was really interesting to be making The Matrix 4 at a time when the world was so warped and when reality was so distorted. It could creep in a little bit if you let it.”

The Matrix 4 is being directed by Lana Wachowski from a script by Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. The cast features returning Matrix cast members Keanu Reeves (Neo), Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity), Jada Pinkett Smith (Niobe) and Daniel Bernhardt (Agent Johnson) alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen), Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist), Neil Patrick Harris (A Series of Unfortunate Events), Jonathan Groff (Frozen II), Priyanka Chopra (Baywatch), Ellen Hollman (Spartacus), Andrew Caldwell (iZombie), and Christina Ricci (Sleepy Hollow), as well as Sense8 stars Erendira Ibarra, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt and Brian J. Smith.

The Matrix 4 is set for release on December 22nd.
