Black Canary movie in the works at HBO Max with Jurnee Smollett returning

August 21, 2021 by EJ Moreno

Black Canary is returning to the DCEU, this time in a solo film on HBO Max.

Cinelinx reported that Warner Bros. and DC Films are producing an HBO Max movie featuring Black Canary, with Jurnee Smollett reprising her role from Birds of Prey. The news was subsequently confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.

Heading the project is Misha Green, the mind behind HBO’s hit-series Lovecraft Country. Green is fresh off six Primetime Emmy Awards and twelve Creative Emmys. She is yet to make her feature directorial debut, but is also attached to the Tomb Raider sequel along with this Black Canary movie.

Black Canary is joining a new breed of DC superheroes heading to streaming, joining Batgirl and Blue Beetle as HBO Max Originals. The events of this film are said to follow Birds of Prey, but there are few details at the time of writing.

As per DC’s official site, Dinah Lance, a.k.a. Black Canary, is a “fearless street fighter and frequent partner to Green Arrow; Dinah Lance tackles injustice with her unmatched martial arts skills and her ear-piercing ‘Canary Cry.’” In the film, she was a vigilante with the metahuman screaming ability, which she inherited genetically from her mother.
