New York Film Festival unveils first look at Joaquin Phoenix in A24’s C’mon C’mon

August 23, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

The last time we saw Joaquin Phoenix on the big-screen he was caked in a combination of make-up and blood in his Academy Award winning guise as Joker, but he appears to be the antithesis of that character in the first still from his next offering, A24’s C’mon C’mon, which is set to have its premiere at the forthcoming New York Film Festival.

A soulful Joaquin Phoenix plays a kindhearted documentary filmmaker taking care of his sister’s troubled young son while trying to complete a project in Mike Mills’s C’MON C’MON, another warm, insightful, and gratifyingly askew portrait of American family life. #NYFF59 pic.twitter.com/qXL00pZYIH

The black and white image was Tweeted by the New York Film Festival account, where C’mon C’mon is set to have its world premiere in October. Directed by Mike Mills, his first film since the terrific 20th Century Women, this is the story of Johnny (Phoenix), a documentary filmmaker who’s left to take care of his precocious but troubled young nephew (Woody Norman). The pair form an unexpected bond after they embark on a cross-country road trip. Gaby Hoffmann and Jaboukie Young-White also star.
