Sony preparing to bump Venom: Let There Be Carnage to 2022?

August 25, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

Venom: Let There Be Carnage has already performed the pandemic shuffle a couple of times, with its most recent delay pushing the release date back only a few weeks to a new opening of September 15th in the UK, and October 13th in North America. However, reports are emerging that we might have to wait until 2022 to get our second dose of symbiote action with the news that Sony could be planning to push the blockbuster sequel to 2022.

Vulture claim that ‘according to multiple inside sources’ Sony are planning to delay the release of Venom: Let There Be Carnage until January 21, 2022, which is currently the release date of the studios other Spider-Man spin-off Morbius. Quite the complicated movie merry-go-round this.

The report claims that continued surges in the Delta variant, coupled with the poor performance of similarly-theme superhero blockbuster The Suicide Squad, which is currently limping towards $50M domestic, has convinced Sony that a three-week delay wouldn’t make much difference to the film’s box-office prospects, which would have been quite optimistic considering the 2018 original surprised everyone with a worldwide gross of $856M.

Sony haven’t confirmed anything yet, but Venom: Let There Be Carnage was conspicuous by its absence at this week’s CinemaCon showcase. Watch this space.

UPDATE: While still officially unconfirmed by Sony, Variety is reporting that “a studio insider says rumors the film will move further to 2022 are not true.”

Venom: Let There Be Carnage sees Andy Serkis (Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle) directing returning Venom cast members Tom Hardy (Eddie Brock/Venom), Michelle Williams (Anne Weying), Woody Harrelson (Cletus Kasady/Carnage), and Reid Scott (Dr. Dan Lewis), alongside new additions Naomie Harris (No Time To Die) and Stephen Graham (The Irishman).

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is tentatively set for release in the UK on September 15th and North America on October 13th.
