Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 first look images tease a multiverse of possibilities

October 23, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Sony Pictures enjoyed huge success with 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the animated feature wowing audiences and critics alike with $375 million in box office receipts, as well as taking home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards.

As you’d expect, Sony wasted little time in announcing a sequel, and with a little over a year to go until the release of the as-yet-untitled Into the Spider-Verse 2, the film’s official Twitter account has shared two first-look teaser images, along with the caption “look out and see a multiverse of possibilities ahead of you”.

It’s not immediately apparent just which version of Spider-Man this is, although the obvious answer is Peter B. Parker, who will once again be voiced by Jake Johnson alongside the returning Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacey and new addition Issa Rae as Jessica Drew, a.k.a. Spider-Woman.

However, the reference to “multiverse” is certainly intriguing, and suggests we could be seeing some familiar screen incarnations of the web-slinger. We’ve already heard that Japanese Spider-Man will make an appearance, and it’s also been rumoured that Spider-Man: The Animated Series’ Christopher Daniel Barnes may feature, but the biggies would of course be Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and current Spidey Tom Holland.

Into the Spider-Verse co-director Rodney Rothman previously revealed that a scene was written for the first movie which featured animated versions of the three live-action Spider-Men, but was pulled to avoid confusing the audience. However, with the Spider-Verse/multiverse now established, Disney and Sony operating on a different deal to the original film regarding Holland’s Spidey (a deal which is also coming to an end), and Maguire and Garfield rumoured (nay, expected) to join him in Spider-Man: No Way Home, perhaps it will be second time lucky?

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is set for release on October 7th 2022.
