Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever halts production until 2022 over Letitia Wright injury

November 6, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Marvel Studios has temporarily paused production on next year’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, with THR revealing that filming has hit a roadblock following an injury suffered by Shuri actress Letitia Wright following an on-set accident in August.

Wright’s character Shuri has been elevated to the sequel’s lead following the death of star Chadwick Boseman, with many fans speculating that she could succeed T’Challa as the new Black Panther. The actress was hospitalised back at the end of August after an accident involving a stunt rig, and it was reported that she had suffered minor injuries.

Director Ryan Coogler has spent the past two months focussing on shooting footage that doesn’t involve Wright, but is now unable to proceed without the actress and so Marvel is reconfiguring the shoot to resume in early 2022. The sequel was recently pushed back from July 2022 to November 2022, and as yet the production hiatus is not expected to impact the current date.

“Letitia has been recovering in London since September from injuries sustained on the set of Black Panther 2 and is looking forward to returning to work early 2022,” Wright’s reps told THR. “Letitia kindly asks that you keep her in your prayers.”

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will see Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, Lupita Nyong’o, Florence Kasumba, Angela Bassett, and Martin Freeman reprising their roles from the original movie, with Dominique Thorne making her MCU debut as Riri Williams/Ironheart and Michaela Coel starring in an as-yet-unrevealed role.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is scheduled for release on November 11th 2022.
