Kathleen Kennedy teases the return of Star Wars Sequel Trilogy characters

November 26, 2021 by Gary Collinson

In the wake of the divisive reception to the Sequel Trilogy, Lucasfilm seems to have shifted its Star Wars focus back towards the Original Trilogy era as the company looks to mine the galaxy far, far away with Disney+ shows like The Mandalorian and the upcoming Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett, Star Wars: Andor, and Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The Disney-owned studio is clearly hoping a return to the more familiar and beloved time period will help to restore some of the goodwill amongst dissatisfied fans, but anyone still holding out hope that The Mandalorian could mark the beginning of a post-Return of the Jedi soft reboot should probably stop reading now as Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy has revealed that the ‘Age of Resistance’ will indeed live on and talks are already taking place about the future of certain characters.

“Certainly, those are not characters we’re going to forget,” said Kennedy when asked by Empire about the future of Resistance heroes such as Daisy Ridley’s Rey, John Boyega’s Finn and Oscar Isaac’s Poe. “They will live on, and those are conversations that are going on with the creative team as well.”

While Lucasfilm has mapped out the next few years of Star Wars on the small screen, it remains to be seen what the theatrical future holds for the franchise. Next up on the slate – officially – is 2023’s Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (although that seems to be falling apart over creative differences), while both Taika Waititi and Kevin Feige are working on separate feature projects.

Either of those could potentially feature characters from the Sequels, although we suspect that Lucasfilm won’t have too much enthusiasm for diving straight back into the Sequel era with Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker still so fresh in the memory, and a Disney+ project of some sort would seem the most likely possibility at this point in time.
