While fans are thrilled at the possibility of more Spider-Man movies, it seems that insiders at Sony are not as cheerful, and are even looking to lower expectations for now.
In a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, the trade notes that the second trilogy announced by producer Amy Pascal is not set in stone even though the relationship between Sony and Marvel Studios is currently going well. From the THR report, they note that while Sony “has a strong relationship with Holland and Feige and hopes to continue their collaboration, there are no official plans for a trilogy at this phase.”
While this news may be pessimistic, the relationship between Marvel Studio and Sony Pictures is rocky at best. The original Sony-Disney deal came undone after the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home, becoming a very public situation and taking the news world by storm. In 2019, they reached a new deal that allowed Holland to shoot Spider-Man: No Way Home also appear in one more MCU film (potentially Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, given the relationship between Strange and Peter in No Way Home?).
This is interesting because of the speculation that Sony’s Spider-Man Universe could be folded entirely into the MCU within the coming years, with rumblings of Tom Hardy’s Venom appearing in the already-crowded No Way Home and rumours claiming Sony’s Spider-Woman movie could be a Marvel Studios co-production.
Only time will tell how this all pans out, but as the Sony insiders noted to THR, the studio’s approach to the future of Spider-Man is to take it one day at a time.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is set for release on December 15th in the UK and December 17th in North America.
