Tom Holland confirms he’ll star as Fred Astaire in an upcoming biopic

December 6, 2021 by EJ Moreno

Tom Holland impresses with his acting, but many know the star for his stellar dancing as well, and he’ll be putting that skill to the test in a new film where he’ll play a cinematic dancing legend.

During the promotional for his upcoming Spider-Man film, Holland dropped the bombshell news that he’s talked with Sony about playing Fred Astaire and has even received a script.

“Oh, I am playing Fred Astaire,” Holland told the AP during Spider-Man: No Way Home promotion in London. “The script came in a week ago; I haven’t read it yet. They haven’t given it to me. I know Amy Pascal has the script. She Facetimed me earlier when I was in the bath, and we had a lovely Facetime. But I will be playing Fred Astaire.”

It should be noted that this reported Sony biopic is different than Amazon’s Fred & Ginger starring Jamie Bell as Fred Astaire and Margaret Qualley as Ginger Rogers. These projects about Fred Astaire do come with a bit of bittersweet news as they seemingly go against his wishes.

First reported in Tim Satchell’s book, Astaire: The Biography, Astaire reportedly did not want a biopic about himself made. At the time, he commented on why he didn’t want his life depicted: “It is there because I have no particular desire to have my life misinterpreted, which it would be.”

Now, times have changed, and biopics’ nature is much different from Astaire’s day, but these recent projects have left a bitter taste in some fans’ mouths. Nonetheless, many are just as delighted to see Tom Holland dance his way into this awards-friendly role.
