Spider-Man: No Way Home becomes Sony’s highest-grossing domestic release, passes $1 billion worldwide to become biggest movie of 2021

December 26, 2021 by EJ Moreno

The success of Spider-Man: No Way Home is not utterly surprising but continues to have new twists.

Sony got a Christmas present in the form of the latest Spider-Man film, becoming the highest-grossing movie ever for the studio domestically. Variety reported on the holiday that Spider-Man: No Way Home will nab about $478 million in just ten days. The previous record for Sony in the States was Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’s $404.5 million.

Keeping at the domestic level, No Way Home dominates the other Spider-Man movies. 2002’s Spider-Man had a record-holding $407 million and more than doubled The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s $202 million. Look for it to now take on the worldwide record held by Spider-Man: Homecoming at an impressive $1.1 billion, having passed the $1 billion mark globally on Christmas Day and becoming the biggest movie of the year ahead of China’s The Battle at Lake Changjin ($904 million). It’s also the first film to pass the billion dollar mark since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

The path of becoming a box office juggernaut wasn’t always set in stone for the film. From an incredible amount of leaks to a new COVID variant popping up like Lokis, No Way Home had an uphill battle. Thankfully it panned out well, and in Sony’s case…really well!

Simmons (J. Jonah Jameson), Martin Star (Mr. Harrington), J.B. Smoove (Mr. Dell), Hannibal Buress (Coach Wilson), Jamie Foxx (Electro), Alfred Molina (Doctor Octopus), Rhys Ifans (Lizard), Thomas Haden Church (Sandman), and Willem Dafoe (Green Goblin).
