The First Purge director to adapt superhero graphic novel Black for Warner Bros.

March 29, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

What if only Black people could get superpowers? That’s the premise behind Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith 3’s graphic novel Black, which Studio 8 and Warner Bros. are hoping to bring to the big-screen, tasking The First Purge’s Gerard McMurray with writing and directing an adaptation.

First published in 2016, Black takes place in a world in which only Black people have superpowers, and focuses on Kareem Jenkins, a young man who miraculously survives being gunned down by police, only to discover that he is part of the biggest lie in history. Now he must decide whether it’s safer to keep it a secret or if the truth will set him free. The six-part story has has spawned a sequel called White, as well as Black [AF]: America’s Sweetheart, which focuses on a female protagonist.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of McMurray’s appointment, with the Fruitvale Station associate producer saying via a statement that he “fell in love with the colorful world Kwanza and Tim created in the comics, and I’m excited to bring life to a story that entertains and challenges the audience at the same time. Black does just that”.
