Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness tracking huge opening weekend, new promos released

May 3, 2022 by Amie Cranswick

As of this moment, DC Films reigns supreme at the top of the 2022 box office, The Batman having debuted to $134 million domestically back in March on its way to $368 million in North America and a worldwide total of $767 million.

However, with Sony’s Marvel pretender Morbius out of the way (having made about as much impact as a fart in a hurricane), it’s almost time for Marvel Studios to kick off its own cinematic slate for 2022, and if tracking is any indication then Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is about to take the crown for the biggest opening of the year so far.

According to Deadline, the Sam Raimi-directed sequel is on course for at least $150 million in domestic receipts this coming weekend, and with some $42 million already in the bank through presales, some estimates are reaching as high as $175 – $200 million – the higher end of which would put it among the top ten openings ever.

It’s certainly not a surprise that Multiverse of Madness looks to open huge: it’s the first Marvel Cinematic Universe release since Spider-Man: No Way Home, one of the biggest movies of all time, features one of that films leads with the same multiverse-spanning concept ramped up to the nth degree, and promises more major fan-pleasing surprise cameos.

We’ll have our review of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness up this Tuesday, but in the meantime you can check out the latest batch of promos below, if you just can’t wait for Thursday’s opening…

In Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

Directed by Sam Raimi, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Benedict Wong (Wong), Rachel McAdams (Christine Palmer), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Mordo), Michael Stuhlbarg (Nicodemus West) and Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) as well as MCU newcomer Xochitl Gomez (The Baby-Sitters Club) as America Chavez.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set for release on May 6th 2022.
