Black Mirror returning for sixth series at Netflix

May 19, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Good news for fans of Black Mirror, as Variety has revealed that a sixth series of Charlie Brooker’s acclaimed anthology series is in the works at Netflix, which Brooker and creative partner Annabel Jones will produce through their recently-formed Broke and Bones production company.

While details on specific plans for series six are being kept under wraps, Variety reports that the new instalments are more cinematic in scope than past episodes and are being treated as individual films. A specific episode count is yet to be revealed, but it is believed that it will be more than the three episodes of series five.

The future of Black Mirror had been up in the air since 2020, when Brooker and Jones left the series’ original production company House of Tomorrow to form the Netflix-backed Broke and Bones. That left the rights to Black Mirror with Endemol Shine Group, which was subsequently acquired by Banijay. However, a deal has now been reached for Netflix to license the show for series six, which is already believed to be at the casting stage.

Originally airing on Channel 4 for two series and a Christmas special between 2011 and 2014, Black Mirror moved to Netflix in 2016 where it has aired a further three series along with the 2018 interactive film Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. Series five premiered on Netflix back in June 2019.
