David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future sets UK release date

July 7, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Vertigo Releasing has announced that it has acquired the UK distribution rights to Crimes of the Future, legendary director David Cronenberg’s return to the body horror genre.

“It’s an honor to be working with David Cronenberg whose films are always an event, which is what we need more of in the independent marketplace right now,” said Edward Caffrey of Vertigo, who will bring the film to UK cinemas this September.

Cronenberg’s latest stars Viggo Mortensen and Lea Seydoux as an underground performance artist couple specialising in avant-garde surgical operations in a not-too-distant future where humanity has undergone biological changes and mutations, including the disappearance of pain and disease. Kristen Stewart also stars as an investigator from the National Organ Registry, who becomes fascinated by their art.

Crimes of the Future premiered at Cannes back in May, where it received a six-minute standing ovation and mostly positive reviews. You can read our thoughts on the film here.

As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed… Their mission – to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.

Featuring alongside Viggo Mortensen, Lea Seydoux and Kristen Stewart in the cast of Crimes of the Future are Scott Speedman, Welket Bungué, Don McKellar, Lihi Kornowski, Tanaya Beatty, Nadia Litz, Yorgos Karamichos, and Yorgos Pirpassopoulos.

Crimes of the Future is set for a UK release on September 9th.
