Taika Waititi says Jeff Goldblum and Peter Dinklage’s Thor: Love and Thunder cut scenes weren’t “good enough”

July 13, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Having made his feelings clear about the potential for a Thor: Love and Thunder: Directors Cut, Taika Waititi has now been speaking about two high-profile cameos which found their way into the edit-suite recycle bin, revealing that the scenes featuring Jeff Goldblum and Peter Dinklage’s returning characters weren’t “good enough”.

Waititi was speaking to Insider about his second Asgardian adventure, which has already grossed $315M at the worldwide box-office, and specifically the excised scenes that brought back Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster from Thor: Ragnarok, Peter Dinklage’s Eitri from Avengers: Infinity War, and introduced Game of Thrones actor Lena Headey in an unspecified role.

Echoing his comments about a director’s cut, the Oscar winning director said “I’m not going to give you a moment because this is my way of telling you, like, people say, ‘I can’t wait for the deleted scenes with those actors. I don’t want people to see the deleted scenes because they’re deleted for a reason: they aren’t good enough. The scenes were not in the movie and that’s it.”

Waititi continued, adding “A scene on its own could be the most funniest thing or intriguing thing, but sometimes those things if you keep them in will just make the movie screech to a halt. So you have to do what’s best for the film. If you ask any of those actors who were cut out – Jeff Goldblum, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage – they all understand how it works. They have been in the game long enough. But that’s just the way I look at things.”

He also had a lot more to say about the Guardians of the Galaxy’s role in the story and his surprise at the Bond style title card which ends the movie, which you can read about here. In the meantime let us know what you thought of Thor: Love and Thunder and whether you think the addition of Goldblum and Dinklage would have made any difference, by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth….

Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Love and Thunder” finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey, unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi), and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Thor: Ragnarok‘s Taika Waititi, who also reprises his CGI role as Korg, Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth (Thor), alongside the returning Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), Jaimie Alexander (Lady Sif), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Dave Bautista (Drax) and Sean Gunn (Kraglin), with Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari) as Gorr the God Butcher and Russell Crowe (Man of Steel) as Zeus.

Thor: Love and Thunder is dividing opinion in cinemas now.
