Sony sets new Karate Kid movie for 2024, but it’s unconnected to Cobra Kai

September 20, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Thanks to the hit streaming series Cobra Kai, The Karate Kid franchise is back in a big way, and arguably as popular as it was during its 80s heyday.

With that in mind, it will come as little surprise to hear that Sony is looking to bring the property back to the big screen, with the studio setting a June 7th 2024 release date for a new Karate Kid movie – the sixth film overall, and the first since the 2010 remake starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith.

What may come as a surprise however is that the new film will be completely unconnected to Cobra Kai, as the series co-creator Jon Hurwitz has clarified on Twitter.

“The guys and I would love to make Karate Kid and Cobra Kai movies and hope to someday,” wrote Hurwitz. “But this one isn’t from us or focused on the Cobra Kai cast. Don’t know much about it, but wish it well.”

Beyond the lack of Cobra Kai-connection, we know absolutely nothing about Sony’s plans, and whether they intend on continuing the Daniel LaRusso story, following up the Hilary Swank-led The Next Karate Kid, or relaunching things entirely from scratch once more.
