Interview – Bud’da talks returning to Raven’s Home

September 28, 2022 by admin

Music producer and composer Bud’da, whose music credits began back in the 1990’s working with Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, is returning for season 6 of Disney’s Raven’s Home…

We sat down with the extraordinary music composer, who successfully transitioned from Dr. Dre to Disney, about some of his favorite scoring moments on the hit TV show starring Raven-Symoné.

Welcome! You’ve got some insane IMDb credits racking up. How easy was it for you to transition into movies and TV?

Actually, the transition was quite difficult, being a notable award-winning music producer did allow for certain doors to open slightly in the composing world but it’s a whole different creative process, I had to learn so many things that I did not know like scoring music to picture, not using samples, editing, and importing video into ProTools and the list goes on and on! I will say that this journey has been well worth it I wouldn’t take back the hard moments for anything in the world!

You’ve been working on Disney’s ‘Raven’s Home’ for a few seasons. Can you tell us about your work on the show?

My work on Raven’s Home has been mainly as music composer, that means that all the music in the show with the exception of the theme song is created by me, it’s been such a fun adventure, and I feel great about being a part of a legacy of a show that has lasted so long as well as being a fan of Raven since my teenage years has always blow my mind to be working on a project with such a talented person!

What is your writing process like for each episode?

The writing process for each show is pretty similar with the exception of the storyline in the show, say for instance there is an emotional scene, or if the cast travels to another place of different people and culture then the music slightly changes, or if it’s a Christmas or Halloween special I totally switch up the music to cater to the season.

Do you get to visit the set in order to get a better understanding ahead of writing the music?

I have visited the set of Ravens Home, it was exciting to be there during the third season and see the stage being built for performance that was going to happen in that season! But mainly I am sent scripts to read over before the episode picture gets to me that I can study and figure out what music I think fits each scene.

Do you ever get involved in the foley aspects for the show?

As far as Foley I haven’t done any as it relates to Raven’s Home, but I do enjoy that creative process also.

What have been some of your favorite moments working on Raven’s Home so far?

The overall process has been fulfilling! Some of my favorite moments working on the show has been working on the episodes that require me to match the theme of the episode with the music, for instants the Christmas episode feels like the regular music, but it has a Christmas flair to it and the same thing goes with the Halloween episode. It’s always fun to do those. Another time I enjoyed was recording a song with Booker, Issac Ryan Brown, Nia, Navia Ziraili Robinson and Tess Sky Katz, a Chicago anthem that they performed was awesome! Such great talent with the three of them I will always remember that moment!

If you could give your younger self a piece of advice, what would it be?

Advice I would give to my younger self is never give up, relationships are everything, over deliver and everything you do, and don’t second guess your creativity!

What’s up next for you?

So many things were next up for me. I’m developing a computer software for music, I’m involved with a TV show being pitched to networks called The Amazing Vitas starring Trevor Jackson. I have some secret projects with Cedric the Entertainer, I’m doing a cartoon called Cam and Lex… the list goes on and on.
