Is Sam Raimi set to direct a remake of ventriloquist dummy horror Magic?

September 29, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Legendary director Sam Raimi could be about to go from the Multiverse of Madness to Magic, with news emerging that the Evil Dead helmer could be set to remake Richard Attenborough’s 1978 creepy doll horror.

During an interview on the podcast Post Mortem with Mick Garris, producer Roy Lee, who’s responsible for the likes of His House, Andy Muschietti’s adaptation of Stephen King’s IT, and current box-office horror-hit Barbarian, revealed that he was working on a remake of the Anthony Hopkins thriller with Raimi.

He told them “I’ve only worked with [Raimi] as a producer on films…actually…the first time I’m gonna work with him as a director is on a remake of Magic. Which is something that we’re working on now. The Anthony Hopkins movie. We’re just actually hearing the final versions of the different takes from writers next week. [Sam] loved the original movie and the book written by William Goldman.”

Magic focused on failed stage magician Corky, played by Anthony Hopkins, who finds success after adding Fats, a foul mouth mouthed, inherently creepy ventriloquist dummy, to his act. However, as his fame grows, Corky’s already fragile mental state begins to deteriorate, with Fats seeming to have developed a will of his own.

The film turned a profit back in the day, making $24 million against a budget of $7 million, and has since gone on to achieve cult status.

With Annabelle back in the Warren’s museum taking a well earned break having earned $850 million at the global box-office, maybe it’s time for a new doll to terrify audiences, with Sam Raimi as the puppet master.
