Super Mario Bros. movie poster invites us into the Mushroom Kingdom

October 4, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Three decades on from the infamous live-action film, Nintendo’s iconic video game property Super Mario Bros. is heading back to the big screen in 2023 with an all-new animated movie from Illumination Entertainment (Minions, The Secret Life of Pets). And, with a first trailer arriving this Thursday, we now have a teaser poster inviting us into the Mushroom Kingdom. Take a look here…

Super Mario Bros. is being directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go! to the Movies) and will see Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World star Chris Pratt lending his voice to Mario alongside Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) as Luigi.

Also featuring in the star-studded voice cast are Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

SEE ALSO: Is Super Mario Bros. the worst adapted property ever?

1993’s live-action Super Mario Bros. was the first major movie adaptation of a video game title, and was a huge failure both critically and commercially. It’s widely regarded as one of the worst films of all time, kick-started the alleged ‘video game movie curse’, and scared Nintendo away from allowing adaptations of its IP until 2019’s Pokemon: Detective Pikachu.

However, Nintendo has worked in close collaboration with Illumination and Universal on this new animated adaptation, and with some impressive talent on board, it’s certainly an interesting prospect. Be sure to check back on Thursday for the trailer.

The as-yet-untitled Super Mario Bros. movie is set for release on April 7th 2023.
