Dune: The Sisterhood series casts Emily Watson and Shirley Henderson

October 4, 2022 by Ricky Church

While attention is being paid to the production of Dune: Part Two, it has been a long time since we’ve had any updates on the planned HBO Max series Dune: The Sisterhood. Now we have our first official casting as Emily Watson (Chernobyl) and Shirley Henderson (See How They Run) will star in the series.

Set 10,000 years before Dune, Dune: The Sisterhood follows “the Harkonnen Sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit.”

Watson and Henderson will portray Valya Harkonnen and Tula Harkonnen, “the formidable Harkonnen Sisters, who have risen to power in the Sisterhood, a secret organization of women who will go on to become the Bene Gesserit.”

As seen in Dune, the Bene Gesserit are a powerful and feared organization in the Imperium made up of women who have the power to control others with their voices. For thousands of years they have carefully steered the empire’s politics, arranging marriages in order to create the perfect bloodline to bring forth a being powerful enough to bridge time and space with their mind.

Diane Ademu-John (The Haunting of Bly Manor) is the creator of Dune: The Sisterhood and will serve as co-showrunner, writer and executive producer with Alison Schapker (Westworld) as co-showrunner and executive producer.

Denis Villeneuve, the director of Dune and currently filming Dune: Part Two, will executive produce the series while Johan Renck (Chernobyl) will direct the premiere episode and executive produce alongside Villeneuve, Jon Spaihts, Scott Z. Burns, Matthew King, John Cameron and Cait Collins and Brian Herbert.

Dune: The Sisterhood is being developed by Warner Bros. Discovery’s HBO Max and Legendary TV. A production start or expected premiere is not known at this time. Dune: Part Two will be released November 17, 2023.
