The Penguin HBO Max series gains Craig Zobel as director

October 7, 2022 by EJ Moreno

The Penguin, from Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe, will make a significant splash on HBO Max. Now, with its new director, prepare for this to be a potential prestige series.

DiscussingFilm broke the story that Craig Zobel is on board to produce the Colin Farrell-led series and direct an undisclosed number of episodes.

Production is looking to work around Zobel’s schedule, as well as Farrell’s, as the actor will soon enter the awards season race for his role in The Banshees of Inisherin.

Craig Zobel is best known for his directorial work on Mare of Easttown, which was nominated for seven Emmys, with Zobel winning two awards in the Outstanding Limited Series or TV Movie categories. The series would win three more for Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, and Lead Actress. Zobel also directed episodes for hit series like The Leftovers, American Gods, and Westworld.

Lauren LeFranc will serve as showrunner for HBO Max’s The Penguin. The Batman‘s Matt Reeves and Dylan Clark are producing the series alongside Farrell, who will also executive produce.

The DC crime series is currently looking to begin filming in January 2013 and wrap by the summer. An early or mid-2024 debut is presently being eyed for the series.
