Margot Robbie on sharing Harley Quinn role with Lady Gaga

October 9, 2022 by EJ Moreno

It’s still hard to believe that Joker 2 will feature Harley Quinn. Even wilder is that Lady Gaga will play the infamous DC clown.

While it’s strange for the fandom to believe, Margot Robbie is also slightly shocked by the news, but the Birds of Prey and Suicide Squad actress is thrilled to share the mantle with someone else, even comparing it to Batman.

In a new interview with MTV News, Robbie has stated that she’s more than happy to see Gaga as another Harley Quinn… even if it’s not 100% officially confirmed yet.

“It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning that all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters the way… like Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor,” said Robbie while promoting her latest film Amsterdam [read our review here]. “Someone gets to do their Batman, or someone gets to do their Macbeth.”

“I feel like, in not so many cases, are there female characters – Queen Elizabeth I, but beyond that, which I got to have a crack out as well, which I was honored to do. I was like, ‘Wow! Cate Blanchett did Queen Elizabeth I. Now I get to.’ It’s such an honor to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing. And I think she’ll do something incredible with it,” she continued.

Robbie has played the role of Harley Quinn in three films to date and put her stamp on the character, and while she has recently stated that she is ready for another appearance there’s been no word yet as to the next steps for her character in the DC Extended Universe.

Lady Gaga will play a still-undisclosed love interest role in Joker: Folie à Deux, the upcoming Todd Phillips sequel. Gaga will star opposite Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix who reprises his role as Arthur Fleck / Joker alongside the returning Zazie Beetz and new cast additions Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Jacob Lofland.

Joker: Folie à Deux is set to hit theaters on October 4th, 2024.
