Matilda Lutz is Red Sonja in first look at long-awaited reboot

October 13, 2022 by Gary Collinson

After years in development hell, The She-Devil with a Sword is making her grand return to the big screen courtesy of Millennium Media, which has released the above first look image of Matilda Lutz (Revenge) in the title role from the upcoming Red Sonja reboot.

Red Sonja is based upon the iconic comic book character created by Roy Thomas (itself based upon Conan author Robert E. Howard’s Red Sonya of Rogatino), and is currently in production in Bulgaria with M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) directing from a script by Joey Soloway (Transparent) and Tasha Huo (Netflix’s Tomb Raider).

In addition to Lutz as Red Sonja, the film’s cast includes Wallis Day (Batwoman) as Annisia, Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy) as Draygan, Michael Bisping (xXx: Return of Xander Cage) as Hawk, Martyn Ford (F9: The Fast Saga) as General Karlak, Eliza Matengu (Thor: Love and Thunder) as Amarak, Manal El Feitury (Code Red) as Ayala, and Katrina Durden (Shadow and Bone) as Saevus.

The new film will mark the second big screen outing for Red Sonja after director Richard Fleischer’s 1985 feature, which saw Brigitte Nielsen starring in the title role alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Conan knock-off Lord Kalidor. A critical and commercial failure, Millennium will be hoping it’s second time lucky for the Hyborian warrior when the reboot hits next year.
