Greg Berlanti’s Green Lantern series seeing major overhaul at HBO Max

October 26, 2022 by EJ Moreno

The landscape of DC Studios is changing, and now the aftermath of the landmark changes begins.

Firstly, we are seeing Greg Berlanti’s Green Lantern series shift dramatically. Not only is the HBO Max series losing its showrunner, but also changing focus on which Lantern to display, with Seth Grahame-Smith stepping away as the era of John Stewart’s Green Lantern begins.

Seth Grahame-Smith, who served as writer and showrunner, has departed the series. Even after completing scripts for an entire season of eight episodes, Grahame-Smith chose to leave following the rotating door of DC leadership.

Since beginning the project, Grahame-Smith has weathered quite a few changes at HBO Max, Warner Bros. Discovery, and DC Comics. This news follows the hiring of James Gunn to run the creative side of DC Studios while Peter Safran is running the producing side of things.

As for the original series plans for Green Lantern, it was set to focus on Guy Gardner and Alan Scott, played by Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story) and Jeremy Irvine (War Horse). THR notes neither Wittrock nor Irvine remain signed on to the series.

John Stewart is one of DC’s first Black superheroes, an iconic part of the Justice League animated  series, and was even teased in a deleted scene from Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The character first appeared in Green Lantern #87 (December 1971/January 1972).

At the moment, producer Greg Berlanti is still attached to Green Lantern.
