Simu Liu praises Destin Daniel Cretton’s Marvel upgrade to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty director

November 15, 2022 by EJ Moreno

As Destin Daniel Cretton moves onto Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, what does that mean for his Marvel introductory character Shang-Chi?

If you ask actor Simu Liu, the man who starred in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Cretton is a perfect choice for the job of reassembling Earth’s Mightiest Heroes – which may well include his newly-introduced Phase Four hero.

At the recent BoxLunch Holiday Gala, ComicBook.com spoke with Liu about Cretton’s future at Marvel and moving up to an Avengers film, stating:

“I’m just so incredibly happy for him; he’s so deserving of that spot. What makes him such a special filmmaker, and I’ve said this from the beginning, even when we were premiering our movie, is his ability to make a $150 million movie really, really small, in the best possible way,” says the actor.

Liu adds, “I’m really looking forward to what he does on that even grander scale of The Avengers because I think it’s easy to maybe get lost in the spectacle of what those movies can be, the vastness and the grandness of it, but if you can maintain the humanity and the human stories, I think that’s what will make a movie memorable and special, and I think Destin’s got it.”

He concludes, “I think he’s got it, and I think he deserves this so much. I’m so excited to get to work for him again.”

ComicBook.com presses Liu on the last sentence, asking if that confirms his appearance in The Kang Dynasty. He doesn’t confirm but implies it makes sense for him to be there. “I would think so… I would hope so. Don’t take my word for it.”

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is set for release in May 2025.
