Margot Robbie says the Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy romance needs to happen on screen

December 10, 2022 by EJ Moreno

If you’re familiar with the character of Harley Quinn, you know the comic book iteration has been with Poison Ivy for quite some time, and now, Harley Quinn herself, Margot Robbie, wants to see the romance on the big screen.

While promoting her upcoming three-hour epic Babylon, Robbie told ComicBook.com that she’s wanted DC to approve the lesbian superhero romance for quite some time.

“I have been pushing for that for years,” Robbie said. “I cannot tell you how hard I’ve been pushing for that. I want it too.”

ComicBook.com asked Robbie if she had any actresses in mind, and she offered up the most default answer. “Honestly… I always picture like Poison Ivy in the comics. I don’t really actually picture an actress doing it.”

Robbie has starred as Harley Quinn in three DC films, starting the role in 2016’s Suicide Squad, following it up with her solo outing Birds of Prey in 2020, and returning for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad in 2021. A Poison Ivy team-up was planned at one point with Suicide Squad helmer David Ayer attached to a Gotham City Sirens movie which was ultimately shelved in favour of Birds of Prey.

With Gunn taking over the creative role at DC Studios, we can undoubtedly expect to see Robbie as Harley again, and let’s hope she brings her iconic DC girlfriend with her. Meanwhile You can see Harley and Poison’s relationship unfold in the underrated animated series Harley Quinn, which is currently streaming on HBO Max.

The next time we see Harley Quinn on the big screen, it won’t be Margot Robbie. Lady Gaga is stepping into the role opposite Joaquin Phoenix for Joker: Folie à Deux, the upcoming Todd Phillips sequel to the hit film, Joker. Robbie recently offered up her take on sharing the role with Gaga, saying the singer-turned-actress will do “something incredible with it.”
