Dwayne Johnson confirms Black Adam will not be part of DC’s immediate future

December 21, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Having fought to bring Black Adam to the big-screen for 15-years, only to deliver a seen-it-all-before movie with middling box-office returns, Dwayne Johnson has conceded defeat for a character he promised would change the hierarchy of power in the DCEU.

Despite spending the last few weeks defending Black Adam‘s $391 million haul at the worldwide box-office, Johnson took to social media to announce that following a meeting with new DC Studios boss James Gunn, “Black Adam will not be in their first chapter of storytelling”. Check out his full statement below…

The news shouldn’t really come as much of a surprise considering the DC fallout that has dominated the entertainment pages over the last few days, with James Gunn addressing toxic fandom in the wake of the cancellation of Henry Cavill’s iteration of Superman and Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3.

However, Johnson did offer up a glimmer of hope to those keen to see a sequel to Black Adam by adding that “DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters.”

Were you a fan of Black Adam? Would you be keen to see The Rock return in the role sometime down the line, or should it be consigned to the DC scrapheap with the Snyderverse? Let us know by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the ancient gods—and imprisoned just as quickly—Black Adam (Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.

Black Adam is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Jungle Cruise) and sees Dwayne Johnson starring alongside Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, Sarah Shahi as Adrianna, Marwan Kenzari as Ishmael, Bodhi Sabongui as Amon, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and Henry Cavill as Superman.

Black Adam is now available on digital download, 4K UHD combo pack and Blu-ray.
